Welcome to the Spotsylvania County Democratic Committee!!
- 2025 Budget Resolution: Save Our Schools
The 2025 House Budget Resolution (HBR) passed with a number of democrats voting in favor in order to avoid a government shutdown. It is important that each of us understand the impact that the HBR may have for our state and local budgets.
General Information about the House Budget Resolution:
-This is the first step of the process that sends the resolution back to Congressional Appropriations Committees who will align discretionary spending and mandatory spending with limits.
-This reconciliation process will continue through September 2025 when the President signs the appropriations and reconciliations bills.
-The Federal Budget is effective Oct 1.
-This HB does not address the deficit. Some estimates indicate it will increase by $22 trillionImpact to Spotsylvania County Schools
-The Spotsylvania school budget for 2026 includes $30.3m in federal funding.
–The HBR includes cuts from 15% to 22% across funding categories of – Federal Operating Grants, Federal Impact Aid, Adult and Community Ed, Special Education, and Food and Nutrition Services.
-Currently our school budget has a shortfall BEFORE these cuts of $20m. Talks are under way locally to lessen that shortfall between the School Board and the Board of Supervisors. Any Federal cuts would further impact the budget. What can you do this week – Mar. 23 – 29?
1. GET INVOLVED – Our first step in this budgeting process is to show our support for a fully funded local school budget by the Board of Supervisors. Check out the Board of Supervisors and School Board meetings for budget related issues and attend the meetings. (The Free Press – On the Agenda on Mondays does a summary of all upcoming meetings. Meetings and links to web sites for each are on the SCDC web site calendar.)2. Next we need to get behind and fully support Abigail Spanberger for Governor.
-Winsome Earle Sears has fully supported Trumps cuts – saying Virginians will be a “all right” and that she fully supports Trump’s efforts.3. GET EDUCATED – We need to learn about and follow the budget reconciliation process to take action as needed.
Do something this week!
Talk to your friends, neighbors, and elected officials about your concern for the impact to our schools and the importance of holding our elected officials responsive to the needs of our community. Be clear that this is a Trump budget and he is responsible for the cuts. Ask if they understand that the proposed tax cuts benefit high income tax payers and add to our deficit, as well as, lower the available money to fund vital services like schools.
Next week – The HBR and our Universities.
